Drexel Readies For Rival Delaware

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Drexel Dragons will look to win back-to-back games for the first time this season when they welcome rival Delaware to the DAC on Thursday night.

Drexel (4-23 overall, 2-14 in CAA) picked up an impressive road win in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Saturday, spoiling Senior Day for William and Mary by beating the Tribe, 74-69. The win snapped an 11-game losing streak for the Dragons.

"We just made plays we haven't made all year," Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint tells KYW Newsradio. "Little bit of it, I just think the guys were like, 'Enough's enough,' we've lost so many games like this when it's tight. I just think we made some good plays on both ends of the floor, both offensively and defensively. The effort was unbelievable throughout the whole night, but I think we've given good effort all year. We just went and made some plays. I think we played without fear, that was the one thing."

Freshman point guard Terrell Allen led the way in the win on Saturday, pouring in a career high 20 points while not turning the ball over once. For his efforts, he was named the CAA Rookie of the Week. Allen is third on the team in scoring at 9.7 points per game and he also leads the team in assists (90) and steals (44).

"He's made unbelievable progress," Flint says. "He went through a stint where he thought he had to shoot the ball to try to help us win. We had a little sit down, I talked to him about it a little bit, said, 'Listen, you're a playmaker. You weren't even a guy who actually scored a lot of points in high school.' And he's gotten back to being the playmaker that I know he can be. I think he has one turnover in the last 70 minutes. He's played unbelievable basketball. And because he's not forcing his offense, he's actually scoring some points. I can actually say I think he's been the most consistent player we've had all year. And that's saying a lot as a freshman. I think he's had a phenomenal year and in the last couple weeks he's played really well."

Delaware has also struggled this season. The Blue Hens are 7-20 overall and, like the Dragons, 2-14 in the CAA. But one of their conference wins came against Drexel in the first meeting between the two rivals. That game was tight throughout, but Delaware surged down the stretch to pick up a 69-60 victory in Newark on February 11th. Flint expects another close game in the rematch.

"It's going to be a hard fought game just because of the rivalry," Flint says. "So no matter what the records of the two teams are, whoever goes in, they are going to fight hard and it's going to be one of those types of battles."

Drexel and Delaware will tip-off at 6:00pm on Thursday night.
