Pa. Attorney General Kane Announces She Is Not Running For Re-election

By Jim Melwert

SCRANTON, Pa. (CBS) — Embattled Pennsylvania attorney general Kathleen Kane is announcing she will serve out her current term, but will not seek re-election.

All along, Kathleen Kane has maintained her innocence, saying became a target of what she calls the good-old-boys network, because of her attempts to root out corruption, but today, she makes the announcement she will not be seeking the democratic nomination in a re-election bid:

"It is not an easy decision. I am ahead of the democratic candidates by double-digits in the polls."

Kane did not reference the criminal charges of obstruction and perjury filed against her in Montgomery County in her announcement here today, or the suspension of her law license, instead she points to family, her sons ages 13 and 15, as a key reason why she's not seeking re-election:

"While I love Pennsylvania, I love my sons first. I am a mother first and foremost."

The announcement comes at the deadline to file nomination petitions; there was question as to whether or not Kane had the required number of signatures to get on the April primary ballot.

Her withdrawal leaves Montgomery County commissioner Josh Shapiro, Northampton County DA John Morgnaelli and Allegheny County DA Steven Zappala vying for the democratic nomination for Attorney General, Montgomery County State Senator John Rafferty is the republican candidate.
