Police Shoot Family Dog After It Attacks Teen, Charges Officers In West Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) — Police say officers shot a family's dog to death after it attacked a teenager and charged at the officers in West Philadelphia.

Police say the 14-year-old girl was at her home in the 5700 block of Pemberton Street with her friends late Saturday night when a knock at the door startled the family's American bulldog. The dog escaped from a locked basement and bit the girl in her face, arms and feet.

Police say the dog then charged responding police officers after her friends called 911. Police say the officers retreated and had to shoot the dog, killing it.

The girl has been hospitalized and is in stable condition.

Authorities are investigating.
