PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Want to seek some sun and warmth? You couldn't pick a better time.
Two things are occupying getaway seekers. Escaping winter and the price of gas. That spells opportunity.
Seniors and people who can work from anywhere have the time to take advantage of a southern road trip.
Off-the-beaten-path at South Padre Island, Texas you'll find sun, beaches and outrageously low hotel prices - from $45 to $135 a night. Regulars here also come for the International flavor of the crowd and food.
"It's fascinating," said one visitor. "You think you're visiting the United Nations."
Let's count some numbers. The round-trip cost to drive for a couple is about $275. The round-trip flight for two would be $1,700. We save enough to pay for everything else.
How about Fort Lauderdale? Two get there on wheels for $175 round trip. The air tickets clock in at $310 plus the fees and car rental.
If you have the time, it may be time to get up and go.
