Workshop Aims To Help Small Businesses Increase Online Presence For DNC And Beyond

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Organizers of the Democratic National Convention expect a $350 million boost to the local economy when the event happens this July. Small businesses don't have to be political to grab a slice of that pie, but they do have to be online -- and in the right way.

It'll be tough for a small business to cash in if they're part of this crowd:

"The reality is that half of them in the state of Pennsylvania do not have a presence online."

Google's Emily Harris says that's step one for the more than 100 people gathered for the search giant's presentation at the Kimmel Center. Next, is your website as usable on a smartphone as it is on desktop?

"I'm taking notes as we go so as I build my website I can be sure to include information that will jump out and grab people so they'll really know what we have to offer," said Cynthia Allen. Allen manages JCJP Healthcare Services, a Yeadon, Delaware County startup. What she's learned?

"Make sure you have the keywords that will focus people onto what you're really offering them," said Allen.

(Reporter:) "What would those be, if I were to type in Google and I wanted to find you?"

"Care management. I think that's probably the best word," said Allen.

The goal, says convention CEO Leah Daughtry? After the Democrats have wrapped up"

"These businesses will still have a website, they'll still have the knowledge and tools to be able to advance their business in this technological age," said Daughtry.
