Kate Bilo: Flood Watch Issued; Melting Snow And Rain Never Good Combination

by Kate Bilo

We are starting the month of February with a little hint of spring - temperatures near 60 today and possible record highs by midweek!

The problem? Spring is also known for its rainfall, and the combination of rain and extensive snowmelt is never a good one.

A significant portion of the snow melted yesterday and today, but snow piles remain and the ground is near saturated. According to the NWS Flash Flood Guidance, Montgomery, Bucks and Chester counties especially will start seeing flooding after only around 1-1.5" of rain falls, and it's looking like many spots will see that amount of rain on Wednesday afternoon. A Flood Watch has been issued for the vast majority of the area, beginning Wednesday afternoon.

Low-lying areas and areas prone to poor drainage will flood first, along with smaller streams and creeks that could run over on to adjacent roadways. Local rivers will have to be monitored as well - especially the Schuylkill. Currently, the Schuylkill River at Norristown is expected to be in minor flood stage by Wednesday night into Thursday morning. If you live in an area prone to flooding, especially in those spots hit hardest by snowfall two weekends ago, please pay attention to our updates and plan for flooding to occur.

Remember, when we talk about flooding we always say: turn around, don't drown. Never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway. We'll continue to provide you with all the latest updates!
