Rowan University Students Encourage Young Girls To Pursue Engineering

NEW JERSEY (CBS) -- Several local engineering students are hoping to encourage young girls to have fun and learn while exploring new career options.

22-year-old Megan DeGeorge is a mechanical engineering student at Rowan University and co-founder of 'Think Like A Girl' activity kits. DeGeorge says the kits are aimed at sparking an interest in young girls.

"Two main reasons why girls don't pursue engineering is because of misconceptions of what it is to be an engineer, and a lack of female role models," she said. "So what we want to do is take these two reasons, and target them and produce kits around them to get girls interested in engineering."

The first activity introduces girls to the Eiffel Tower, they get to build their own structure out of gumdrops and toothpicks, and read a trading card about a real, female structural engineer.
