Philadelphia Couple Is Calling "Savesies" Despite Police Rule

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Because of the huge snowfall, Philadelphia police residents not to save their parking spots in the days after the storm.

But the Rhawnhurst community is supporting one local family who isn't following that rule.

Cruising around the streets of Rhawnhurst in Northeast Philadelphia, snow-weary residents have marked their spots.

"I did shovel out my spot and saved it, I must admit," Thurmond Sanders confessed to Eyewitness News.

Saving shoveled out parking spaces using chairs, garbage cans and cones.

"This is our cone," Teri Gilbert said.

For Gilbert, who is 6 months pregnant, this cone is different.

Her handwritten note taped to it comes from a heart-wrenching place.

"It says this space was shoveled out by a cancer patient for his pregnant wife. Please dig out your own spot, thank you," Gilbert said.

Teri's husband Mike was diagnosed with stage 4 head and neck cancer in November.

He shoveled their car out of nearly 2 feet of snow during this weekend's storm, despite his illness.

"I can't shovel out any snow. I'm pregnant and you're not going to physically be able to again, so the cone is going out," Teri said.

"I would comply. She's pregnant, he's ill. Why not have a heart," neighbor Nancy Vargas said.

Teri says heartfelt gestures have been pouring in.

"We actually had one neighbor we don't even know leave us a note to say he would shovel us out anytime in the future," Teri explained.

So for now, Teri is hoping neighbors and police will understand this open act of defiance and open their hearts, at least until the snow melts.
