SEPTA Working To Remove Snow Near Bus Stops

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- SEPTA says it's working to remove those small mountains of streetside snow near bus stops.

Tried to board a SEPTA bus lately?  Mindy Early of Roxborough has.

"It was really hard to actually get on the bus.  And that's about two feet worth of snow there that you're trying to step over.  So it was a little difficult."

If there's a narrow path through the snow, drivers are trained to let riders off there.

SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch says the transit agency's priority immediately after the storm was clearing snow from the streets so buses could resume their routes.  Now, he says, SEPTA crews are clearing snow from shelters and stops along the most heavily traveled bus routes in Center City.

"The beginning of the effort focused on Market and Chestnut Street, from Front Street to City Hall.  So we've been going along with our crews, all in coordination with the city to clear those bus stops."

The next phase is from City Hall to 30th Street.

Busch says the transit agency does not own the bus shelters and bus stops -- the city, and in some cases, private businesses do.  There are 15,000 SEPTA bus stops throughout the region.
