Man Faces Charges In Connection With Schuylkill Canal Crash
UPPER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, Pa., (CBS) -- A 21-year-old Montgomery County man is facing Vehicular Homicide and other charges, as police say he allegedly drove a car into the Schuylkill Canal in Upper Providence Township, killing two people.
Police allege Robert Hoffman was under the combined influence of marijuana, clonazepam, and alcohol when he backed a car over the edge of an embankment of the Schuylkill Canal at Lock 60 of the Park in Mont Clare, on October 5, 2015. And police say he never had a driver's license.
The criminal complaint alleges Hoffman misjudged the distance when he backed up the Volkswagen Passat. The car rolled down the embankment, coming to rest on its roof in water about 4-feet deep.
Hoffman and one other passenger were able get out of the car, but two other people, 29-year-old Clinton Berger and 25-year-old Lauren Magargal both drowned.
Hoffman is charged with accident involving death while not properly licensed, Homicide by Vehicle, and other related charges.
