Allentown Struggles With Cleanup After Record Snowfall

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (CBS) --  Inch by inch, Allentown is digging out of the historic snow storm, receiving 33+ inches of snow.

"This is nuts. I've lived in Allentown for 37 years, and this is the worst," resident Dave Werten says.

With school canceled both Monday and Tuesday, Dave Werten, who works maintenance for the district, is trying to blaze a path so students will have a way to get to class.

The city says many primary roads are ok, the problem though, are the secondary roads that are still filled with feet upon feet of snow.

"We are trying our hardest. We are working night and day," says Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski

The mayor says ever plow the city owns is in use… but he's asking for more help.

"I'm going to ask if there are any contractors out there, cause we need front loaders and dump trucks," he says.

Elvira Stalsitz though, doesn't need any help. Armed with her shovel, she's already shoveled herself out of this mess…

"Right now, i just laid this path to go up the street in case i want to walk somewhere," she says. "I'm 94 years old and in all my life, I haven't seen anything like this," she says.
