Gov. Christie: 'We Do Not Anticipate Travel Bans, Evacuations At This Point'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called in to Eyewitness News Saturday morning to give an update on conditions in New Jersey during the winter storm.

Governor Christie says at this time, his concern is keeping people off of the roads so crews can continue to plow freely.

"The reports we're getting are roads are lightly traveled, so that's good news."

He does not think a travel ban will be needed at this time.

"It's a serious storm, but we're ready to deal with it."

As for evacuations, he does not think they will be necessary either.

"If you're inside, stay inside."

He continues, "We're keeping an eye on high tide, but we are confident it will mostly be street flooding."

Christie insists the storm is "nowhere near" Superstorm Sandy in terms of flooding down the shore.

"Anyone who is saying that should stop. Anyone who is in South Jersey, please stay inside, but don't worry about evacuations at this point.  If that changes, we'll let you know."

Christie says while he was accused of putting politics over governing, he wanted to "make a decision of what the storm was going to look like."

"I wanted to get the most recent information. Once I heard this was going to be a significant snow event, I hopped in the car from New Hampshire to New Jersey and I was down here last night before the first snowflake hit the ground. We're here and I'm going to be here until things are under control. My first and most important responsibility is being governor of New Jersey."

On a lighter note, when asked if his family partakes in the tradition of eating french toast on snow days, Christie says, "I'm getting ready, but downstairs it smells like waffles!"
