Potentially Massive Snowstorm Brings About A Unique Food Opportunity
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's a staple of Philadelphia snow preparation: News stories about people rushing to the supermarket to buy milk, bread and eggs.
The ingredients for French toast, right?
So we figured if people are going to make French toast, we may as well show you how to make it extra special.
At Hawthornes Cafe in Bella Vista, head chef Ron Silverberg whips up a version of French toast that will make your mouth water.
He's using the basics ingredients but there's a twist, several types of day-old bread, cut into cubes and mixed into a custard.
It tastes more like bread pudding than egg-battered toast.
Hawthornes owner Chris Fetfatzes says you don't have to stick to traditional recipes.
He even suggested adding craft beer to the custard.
"So basically the evolution of beer now is appealing to a sweeter palate. So there is banana bread beer and there is fruit-based beer and a coffee-based beer and a blueberry stout. And if you don't like beer, there are liquors, like Irish creams."
Fetfatzes recommends a 70/30 liquid ratio: 70% milk and 30% of the liquid of your choice.
Then sit back and enjoy your NOT so traditional french toast.
