Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Ski Resorts Grounding Drones
By Jay Lloyd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If there's a skiing getaway in your weekend plans and you've packed that brand new drone and camera, you'd "better unpack it."
Santa was good. New skis and a new drone. But ski resorts here and across the country are posting notices, warning visitors to ground the birds.
"We have a lot of power lines coming into the area," says Jim Trust, whop operates Shawnee Mountain. "We obviously have lifts running in the air."
Trust has already seen a visitor show up with a drone and had complaints from skiers and riders.
"We saw that thing flying over," he says, "and, you know, some people aren't comfortable with that above them."
Especially since a well watched video appeared showing a drone crashing to the snow, narrowly missing a racer during an Alpine Slalom event.
In the Poconos, Shawnee, Camelback and Montage have "no fly" policies on their web pages. Others will likely join soon. Check before you fly and avoid schlepping gear you can't use.
