2 Police Officers Hurt In North Philly Crash

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Authorities say two police officers were injured in a car accident Wednesday night in the Fairhill section of Philadelphia.

The officers were in plain clothes and were driving an unmarked car, authorities say, responding to reports of shots fired and a possible armed man when the crash happened around 11:30 p.m.

"It was a pretty violent auto accident," says Chief Inspector Scott Small.

A 20-year-old man slammed into the officers at the intersection of B Street and Westmoreland. After the crash, the 20-year-old ran off, authorities say.

Police called for backup and caught up with him four blocks away, then arrested him after a brief struggle. Police say he was drunk and driving with a suspended license.

The officers were taken to Temple Hospital in stable condition. One officer is suffering from a head injury, the other has a broken finger. Both are e be okay.

"The 20-year-old suspect didn't have any visible injuries," Small says, "however he appeared to be shaken up."

He is now facing at least two charges -- DUI and Resisting Arrest.
