Freezing Temperatures Causing Big Problems For Some

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (CBS) -- Our region is in the midst of a deep freeze. It's weather that's tough on both people and infrastructure.

Plunging temperatures made life miserable for many on a cold day, ushered in by fierce winds overnight.

The bitter cold caused a 6-inch main to snap outside the Daniel S. Lepore Construction Company in Conshohocken, Montgomery County.

The break sent a 30-foot high geyser shooting above buildings, deluging roofs and leaking into the company headquarters where workers scrambled to cover electronic devices and documents with plastic.

"It looked like Old Faithful", company co-owner Gregory Lepore told CBS 3's Walt Hunter.

Elsewhere, morning rush-hour drivers were delayed after ice and non-working signals forced closure of a major intersection at Montgomery Drive and the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia firefighters did their best to shield themselves from the cold battling a fire that consumed a rowhouse in the 1700 block of North Lindenwood Street in West Philadelphia.

Fortunately no one was hurt.

Septa officials say their trains, buses and trolleys had no major problems on this frigid morning.

Septa explaining a new policy, shielding some El and subway cars inside tunnels on frigid nights helped keep everything running smoothly.
