Weekend Box Office Report: 'Star Wars' Remains Dominant Force
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Already the domestic box office champ of all-time, Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues rewriting the record books.
For the fourth consecutive weekend, the runaway-hit sci-fi sequel finished in first place by earning an estimated $42-million, bringing its record-setting cumulative total over the $800-million mark.
The runner-up was the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring survival melodrama, The Revenant, which totaled $38-million.
In third place was the Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy, Daddy's Home, with $15-million.
And fourth was the debuting horror thriller, The Forest, with $13-million.
Overall, and largely because of the performance of the blockbuster seventh entry in the Star Wars franchise, industry-wide totals were well below those of last weekend but well above those of a year ago.
