Montco Board Of Commissioners Chairman To Announce Attorney General Bid

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  The chairman of Montgomery County's Board of Commissioners will officially announce Tuesday that he is running for Attorney General.

Josh Shapiro says he feels his record shows he's the best person to lead the Attorney General's office.

Shapiro joins a growing field of candidates including Allegheny County district attorney Stephen Zappala.

Shapiro has spent his career in politics rather than a prosecutor's office, but he believes that's a strength in this race.

"There's a clear contrast in this race. I think Pennsylvanians are looking for a leader who knows how to clean up a mess, who's got a record of conducting themselves with integrity and the judgment to make the right calls each and every time," he said.  "I have that record."

Shapiro says for now he is only focused on his own campaign and won't speculate whether or not Kathleen Kane would seek re-election.

Shapiro has a law degree from Georgetown and was elected to the State House of Representatives in 2004 and to the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners in 2011.

He was just sworn in to his second term as commissioner last week.
