Police Investigate Assault Of Officer Working Detail For Officer Jesse Hartnett
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police have released information regarding an assault on a Philadelphia Police Officer that occurred on Saturday night at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
The incident took place around 10:42 p.m., according to authorities. Police say an officer was working a detail, at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, for Officer Jesse Hartnett who was shot and wounded in the line of duty on Thursday.
Authorities say the officer was approached by a man prior to entering the PPMC. The man asked the officer for some money and claimed that he hadn't eaten in five days. Police say the officer gave the man $5 and then entered the building.
Police say that later, the officer stood by the emergency room entrance when the male came from behind and attempted to grab the officers gun from his holster.
Authorities say the officer spun around to prevent the man from grabbing his gun. According to officials, a struggle followed and the man was subdued by the officer and members of Penn's security team.
Police say the man claimed to be trying to take the officer's gun to conduct a robbery at a store.
Authorities say the man suffered a minor facial injury and the officer was uninjured.
Philadelphia Police add that this incident was not related to the shooting of Officer Hartnett in any way.
