PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- We often here a complaint that many physicians are strong on science but not so strong on personality.
One of the biggest barriers may be the test that many students take to be admitted to medical school. It is called the MCAT. Over the years it has been almost entirely scientifically based with an emphasis on chemistry, physics and biology -- obviously some areas of study important for future doctors but not necessarily focusing on people skills. Recently the test was revised to include a psychological, social, and biological behavior component to gauge students' softer skills.
This is a great move because being a good doctor is about more than scientific knowledge it also requires an understanding of people. The softer skills of physicians, such as bedside manner and communication style, can impact patient experience, satisfaction, and quality.
