Evidence, Studies And Common Sense Data

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A great deal of the decision making in medicine these days is based on evidence and studies but there are still many things that make sense and have not been tested over time or studied extensively.

Common sense data seems to make the rules. For instance we have had no basis for any of our recommendations regarding sodium restriction during the past 50 years.

One of the areas where this is becoming a concern is in the case of people with heart failure. We know that too much salt can be bad but how much do we have to restrict it. Scientists are starting to take a serious look to try and figure how much is too much and how little can cause problems.

It is a case where the evidence needs to be researched but common sense will probably be supported.
