Mummers Strut Their Stuff Through Center City

By Mike Dougherty, Alexandria Hoff

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - New Years in Philadelphia means the Mummers strutting down Broad Street.

Friday was the 116th installment of the Mummers Parade – a family tradition for many, including Jack who traveled from Rhode Island just to keep that tradition alive:

"My father's a Mummer, my father's father was a Mummer, so it's just tradition, and when I had my boys I wanted to keep the tradition so we drive five hours every New Years to come enjoy the best parade in the world."

Many spectators say they wouldn't miss this parade for anything in the world, because there's nothing else in the world like it.

As for the rest of the participants, over 10,000 turned the city into one, big carnival where the competition is fierce, and the bragging rights coveted.

"Once I hear the music I gotta go," says John, who participated in his 79th Mummers Parade Friday.

He joked he'll continue marching until rigor mortis gets him.

Beth on the other hand had her first taste of the Mummers:

"It is like nothing I've seen before."

The event began at City Hall at 9 am, judging took place at 15th and JFK, then the parade continued down Broad Street and ended at Washington Avenue.

This is a modified route compared to past years, and many spectators hoped things would go back to the way they used to be.
