DNC Committee Kicks Off Community Service Campaign At Phila. Boys And Girls Club

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Democratic National Convention isn't until July 2016, but volunteers are already making an impact in Philadelphia. The first of a series of community outreach events was Thursday at the Wissahickon Boys and Girls Club.
Inside the gym, DNC staffers set up a little Christmas Village of donated items. Kids can use Wissahickon bucks to buy gifts for their families.
Araminta Brown with the Boys and Girls Club says it means the world to them.
"They show people 'see what I got for my mom! Look! I'm buying this for my brother!' The excitement is phenomenal."
DNC CEO Leah Daughtry says it's important to make an impact in neighborhoods through events like this.
"We want to be part of what's happening in the community and not just coming in, and running a convention, and leaving."
And she says there will be a number of other community outreach events leading up to the DNC this summer.
