Driver Strikes Police Cars, Drives Through Playground, In Attempt To Evade Police

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- According to Philadelphia Police, a man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after crashing his vehicle into two Philadelphia Police vehicles in an attempt to evade police on Tuesday night.

Authorities say at around 9:00 p.m., officers attempted to arrest two men inside a vehicle parked at the intersection of Cottman Avenue and Torresdale Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia.

Police say that when officers approached the vehicle, the driver of the car put the car in reverse and hit the parked police car. No officers were in it at the time. Authorities say the driver then tried to hit the officer who was able to get out of the way.

Police add that the vehicle then fled, driving through an area playground where police believe that car blew a tire.

Police pursued and say narcotics were observed being thrown from the vehicle during the chase.

The driver stopped on the 7600 block of Torresdale Avenue, and according to authorities, both the driver and the passenger opened their doors.

Police approached at this time, and according to authorities, the driver again took off and hit two police cars, one of which was the car hit the first time.

Authorities say the vehicle stopped again on the 7900 block of Torresdale Avenue where the two men took off on foot.

Both the driver, 51 and the passenger. 30, were later taken into custody.

Police say that both men are in custody for possession of narcotics. They add the driver is also in custody for eluding police and aggravated assault.

No police were injured during the incident.
