Local Girls Of Color Participate In Workshop Aimed At Boosting Self-Esteem

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Police Athletic League of Philadelphia hosted an event Thursday night designed to build the self-esteem in girls of color.

Hundreds of young ladies from around the city came out to the Black Doll Affair where they got to participate in different positive image activities.

"We're having a self building event and workshop," says Nadirah McCauley with the Police Athletic League. "We'll be hearing from panelist from across the city and really we're going to talk about diversity, beauty and how we can be better individuals."

She says this event helps instill in the girls the power that they can succeed and move forward:

"This makes me super proud, being from Philadelphia I love giving back to my community. I love giving back to young girls and just to see a bunch of young girls of color and different backgrounds in this gym right now celebrating diversity really makes me happy.

Some of the girls who participated told KYW Newsradio what they enjoyed most:

"The activities they have for us and the food and all that."

"I'm enjoying being out here with my friends."

At the end of the event, all of the girls were sent home with a doll of their own.
