Sales Tax Hike For Property Tax Relief Dropped From Pa. Budget Talks

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) --  The on-again, off-again deal to end Pennsylvania's budget stalemate is on again, but it appears that a plan for a major sales tax hike to generate funds for property tax relief is NOT part of the discussion for now.

On Monday, Governor Wolf said the tentative budget deal was in "deep peril."

Late Tuesday afternoon, it appeared to have fallen apart, with Senate Republicans threatening to take an override vote on Wolf's veto of temporary stopgap funding.

Then Tuesday evening, word came that the deal was back on track.

But, says Steve Miskin, spokesman for the House Republican majority leader, without the sales tax for property tax relief component announced two weeks ago, "Right now, the property tax issue is going to be off on the side because there is such a diverse difference of opinion on how to deal with the issue. It is something that we are going to take back up and work with the governor and try to see what we can do to get some permanent relief."

In a statement, the governor's spokesman characterized Tuesday's developments as "theatrics."
