Philadelphia Police Ask Public To Remain Vigilant During Thanksgiving Day Parade
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police are all set to make sure Thursday's 96th annual Thanksgiving Day Parade is a safe and fun for everyone who attends.
The 1.4-mile parade is the nation's oldest, dating back to 1920, and Philadelphia Police officials are hoping to keep this year's party on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway just as safe as it's been in years past.
Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross says police will have a heavy presence at the event, but they also need the public to play their part as well.
"We also need people to be vigilant, because it's the times we live in," Ross says. "Keep your eyes open. We don't want people to panic, because that's not the atmosphere we're trying to create. But we do need you to be cognizant of the world we live in, and if you see something, say something."
The Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off at 8:30 a.m. at 20th Street and JFK Boulevard, before marching up the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the Art Museum, where things wrap up around noon.
