Taste With Tori: Tate's Good Food Restaurant

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as some people say, then this is the place to go!

Known for its home fries, this Northeast Philly restaurant is a family favorite.

It's breakfast time and all the seats at the counter are taken at Tate's Good Food Restaurant.

This place is kind of the 'Cheers' of Holmesburg where everyone knows your name and your order.

"Great food, it's a great atmosphere, the waitresses are fantastic, super nice girls", said customer Robin Elliott, who has been coming to Tate's Good Food Restaurant for 8 years.

She's talking about waitresses like Lisa Ballantine who just loves her customers.

"I just talk to them, feed them, make them happy and they make my day," said Lisa, who has been working at the restaurant for 11 years.

Lisa reached out to us on Facebook after watching our Taste With Tori reports every night.

"When I was watching them, it was like family, you went to places where the girls worked hard and they made the people happy," she said. "And I just thought she would love to be at my place, I know we'd make her happy and give her great food."

Great food,  that's an understatement.

It was awesome food

Tate's Good Food Restaurant  is  known for their home fries that are crisp and covered with something the restaurant calls 'dust'- a secret blend of seasonings.

Up on the menu board there's the Tower Of Tori French Fries smothered in peppers, chili and cheese.

Everyone should try the s'mores pancakes with marshmallows, crumbled graham crackers and a chocolate drizzle.

Homemade crepes are made from scratch with sweet cheese inside and apple , blueberry and strawberry sauce on the outside.

"Our goal when we opened it was to make it a real family place," said Joanne Jones, the owner of Tate's Good Food Restaurant. "Our waitresses became very close to the customers, like family."

With her own family of 5 children now grown, one daughter and one son in the Marines,  Lisa gets emotional thinking of how much she misses big family meals.

But she gets her taste of family at work.

"My family is far away so this is my family," she said referring to the customers.
