Mayor-elect Kenney Creates New Position In His Cabinet

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia Mayor-elect Jim Kenney is creating a new position in his Cabinet: Chief Officer for Diversity and Inclusion. It's one of three appointments he announced Wednesday.

Attorney Nolan Atkinson will be the first person to fill the job. Kenney says the goal is to make the city workforce reflect the diversity of city, at every level, including higher-paid management positions, where right now, minorities are under-represented.

"There's been a level of unfairness and I look forward to having his guidance in having that be repaired," said Kenney.

Atkinson has been working on the issue in the private sector for many years. He welcomes the opportunity to work inside government.

"To try to be a little bit of a change agent for the city of Philadelphia to bring our city closer together," said Atkinson.

Kenney also announced he'll keep a Chief Integrity Officer, a position created by Mayor Michael Nutter. That role goes to Ellen Mattleman, formerly of the Committee of Seventy. And he'll keep Amy Kurland as Inspector General.
