City Council Hearing Scheduled On Bills Needed For Construction Of The City's Second Casino
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A hearing is scheduled in Philadelphia City Council, today, on the bills that are needed for construction of the city's second casino.
Cordish Companies' Chief Operating Officer Zed Smith says all five community groups in the stadium area, where the Live! casino would go, now support the project.
"It took us meeting with the community, understanding their concerns, developing plans to address those concerns and making a commitment for a long-term funding to address some of the issues they expressed to us over multiple meetings," Smith said.
Cordish and its partner, Parx Casino, have agreed to make $15 million in donations over the next 20 years.
Still unsatisfied though is the National Action Network, founded by black activist Al Sharpton. That group accuses the company of racial discrimination against employees and patrons in its other casinos. They've promised to bring the alleged victims to Philadelphia to tell their stories.
