Salvation Army Kicks Off Red Kettle Season In Center City

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Salvation Army kicked off red kettle season in Center City Thursday afternoon, with a soup cook off at the Bellevue food court.

Local TV news personalities ring their bells as the donations are dropped in to the famous red kettles. Salvation Army Major Philip Ferreira says this little competition has no loser.

"Back and forth here. Someone was putting some money in, and they were ringing the bell. Then they were upping the other side. I'm really hoping these kettles will be full by the time we're done."

This is the beginning of the biggest time of year for donations to the Salvation Army. More and more of the red kettles will pop up as the season progresses.

"Whatever we can do to help is what we're about."

And the Salvation Army has helped millions get back on their feet over the past 150 years.
