Pa. Lawmakers Eye Fantasy Sports Betting Sites

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- A key legislator on gaming issues says he's not looking to ban fantasy sports betting sites in Pennsylvania, but he wants to make sure that players are protected.

He says negotiations are taking place with sites like FanDuel and DraftKings about legislation in the works.

The state House Gaming Oversight Committee will hold a hearing on fantasy sports betting next month. The chairman of the committee, Republican John Payne, says it is not his intention to shut down fantasy sites, but he says he is concerned about news reports regarding insider betting and wants to make sure that the sites are vetted, as the state's casinos are.

"So that we can verify, who are the principals of the organization? Let's do the background checks. And where's the revenue going? The commercials always show the one guy that won two million bucks. They don't show you the two million guys that lost a hundred bucks."

Payne says fantasy sports betting sites could be required to get a license, or be required to run through an existing casino. Meanwhile, Payne's committee Monday held a hearing on a proposal to allow slot machines at Pennsylvania's six international airports.
