A New Name -- And More -- For Delaware County Tourism

By David Madden

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) - Marketing with a bit of attitude best describes the new emphasis for tourism efforts in Delaware County.

Officials this week unveiled a new name for their campaign. Gone is the "Brandywine Country" title for what has served as the unofficial moniker for the county's Conference and Visitor's Bureau.

Now they're calling it "Destination Delco."

"It had more to do than just changing the name because it sounded kind of nifty," Bureau Director Tore Fiore told KYW Newsradio. "It's to change the way we go about thinking of ourselves and promoting ourselves."

Fiore says too many competitors were using "Brandywine" in one form or another, and his agency wanted to set itself apart.

And there are also areas of the county that got lost in the old marketing approach, towns like Media and Swarthmore with Main Streets, not to mention the Main Line as a whole.

Then there's Upper Darby with its rich cultural diversity. And areas along the Delaware River waterfront like Chester that also have a lot to offer.

On top of that, there's Delaware County's proximity to Philadelphia. Fiore hopes the hospitality folks will pick up on the new campaign:

"It just makes sense to give this promotion and this marketing to our hotels and bed and breakfasts to let people know that you can stay in Delco for a whole lot less."

The agency will boost its social media presence as one way to get the word out.
