Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Colebrookdale Railroad

By Jay Lloyd

BOYERTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- The past is as close as Boyertown in Berks County. A refurbished railroad is bringing 19th century travel between Berks and Montgomery counties back to life.

It was a birthday ramble for a friend that chugged away from the station on Boyertown's Main Street. The Colebrookdale Railroad sprang to life as its engine and three passenger cars began the eight mile run through dense woods, hiding old Indian trails along the picturesque Ironstone and Manatawny Creeks. Destination: Pottstown. The coach with its 19th century fittings and wood stove to take the chill off a fall day was an instant passenger pleaser.

"Oh my gosh. I love the interior of that train," said one woman. "It was so beautiful."

"I was impressed by the whole ride," said one man, "especially the restoration of the cars."

The route takes us over trestle bridges and through sheet rock cuts.

Run by train buff volunteers, the line will be running for weekend day-trip getaways right through New Years.
