Survey: About 30 Percent Of Teens Have Used Text Messages To End Relationships

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new survey finds about 30 percent of teens have ended a relationship through text message.

According to a survey by Pew Research Center, 27 percent of teens have broken up with someone via text message, and 31 percent have been broken up with in this way.

The survey also found that phone calls are just as common as a breakup text.  According to the survey, 29 percent of teens reported they have broken up with someone over the phone, and 27 percent have been broken up with in this manner.

According to the survey, breakups through social media are also relatively common. The survey found 18 percent of teens have experienced or initiated a breakup by sending a private social media message, changing their relationship status on Facebook or posting a status update.

However, the survey also found that most teens agree that breaking up in person is the most socially acceptable way to end a relationship.  The survey found about 62 percent of teens have broken up with someone in person, and 47 percent have been broken up with through an in-person conversation.

According to the Pew Research Center, the survey included teens ages 13 to 17 and was conducted online from Sept. 25 through Oct. 9, 2014, and Feb. 10 through March 16, 2015. The Center says 16 online and in-person focus groups with teens were conducted in April 2014 and November 2014.
