Pope Francis Gains Popular Social Media Following

By Melony Roy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Whether you're on the ground or online, social media is a great way to see the Papal action from every angle.

Pope Francis has dominated newsfeeds and timelines on social media for most of the week.

While he's not the first Pope to tweet, that was his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Francis and his staff have enhanced his following on Twitter substantially. For example, he now has 5 times the number of followers of President Obama.

Pope Francis simply known as @Pontifex on Twitter has 9 accounts, each for a different language. The most popular is his Spanish handle with 9.8 million followers.

In total the Pontiff has over 23 million followers on Twitter.

Most of his tweets focus on prayers, world events, and the environment.

Pope Francis hasn't tweeted since he left Cuba but the official hashtag for the Philadelphia leg of the trip is #PopeInPhilly.
