Viral Infections Responsible For Most Infections

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There is a tendency for people to think that the vast majority of infections in the body are caused by bacteria and can be treated by antibiotics, however this is not necessarily true.

Viral infections are responsible for most of the infections that we face. A great examole is acute bronchitis, which is most often caused by viruses. In many cases, the same viruses that cause colds and the flu cause bronchitis. Rarely, bronchitis may also be caused by a bacteria or fungus. In some cases, being exposed to smoke, fumes or dust may also cause bronchitis.

Another great example is infections that lead to GI problems. In children it is rotavirus that leads to diarrheal infections and for adults we see the norovirus. Most of the major problems that we have seen on cruise ships, hotels and other areas where we see the spread of gastrointestinal issues are the result of viral issues.
