Saturday Mail Delivery In Eight City ZIP Codes In Limbo On Papal Weekend

By Molly Daly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The United States Postal Service will temporarily put Saturday mail delivery and pickup on hold in eight Center City ZIP codes when Pope Francis visits Philadelphia.

Neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. But a papal visit? Postal service spokesman Ray Daiutolo says that's a whole different kettle of fish.

"On Saturday, when the pope's here on that weekend," he says, "there's going to be some ZIP codes where the postal service will not be able to make deliveries."

That's in Center City ZIP codes ending in (191)02; 03; 04; 06; 07; 22; 23; and 30.

Some retail locations will close Friday, September 25 at noon.

"And then the Main Office Delivery, which is at 3000 Chestnut Street, we're going to close that on Friday at 4 o'clock," Daiutolo says.

He also says blue mailboxes will be yanked off the streets in some parts of Center City.

"We're going to remove blue collection boxes in the areas of 19104, 19107, 19130, and 19122," he says.

Those mailboxes are slated to be reinstalled the following Monday, September 28.

Daiutolo says customers in the affected ZIP codes will receive something in the mail that explains all of the details.
