Camden County Officials Marking 9-11 Attacks With Solemn Ceremony

By Mike Dougherty

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (CBS) - Officials in Pennsauken, New Jersey are honoring those slain in the 9-11 attacks by placing 2,997 flags at the township's memorial site.

Rows of American flags will take over the memorial grounds near Route 130 and Merchantville Avenue. Each flag represents a person who died in the attacks.

Township spokesman Frank Sinatra says it's important to remember freedom comes at a cost:

"It's something that stays with you, and the event that we have in Pennsauken -- it's really very solemn, very touching. And it kind of keeps things in perspective."

He says the event often draws an impressive crowd:

"There's a sea of American flags to remember those who lost their lives during the attack. It's very moving."

He says you always see many of the same faces at the event, and it serves as a reunion of sorts for many of the first responders in the area.
