Weekend Box Office Report: 'War Room' Wins Quiet Weekend
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Labor Day weekend is nearly always a dead zone at multiplexes and this year was no exception.
The box office winner by default was the holdover faith-based drama, War Room, with a modest total of just over $9-million.
The gangsta rap musical drama, Straight Outta Compton, the leader the last three weekends, was the runner-up with just under $9-million, enough to bring its cumulative total ever closer to the $150-million mark.
Third was the debuting hiking comedy, A Walk in the Woods, with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, which opened to $8-million.
The hit sequel, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, was fourth with $7-million.
And rounding out the top five was the new action-thriller sequel, Transformer Refueled. It also took in $7-million.
Industry-wide totals were, as expected, the lowest so far this year.
