Police Announce Arrest In Deadly South Street Shooting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A man was shot dead when gunshots rang out on South Street Friday night, canceling a rap concert at the Theatre of Living Arts and ending with a man arrested and charged with murder.

Police say officers saw a scuffle and heard gunshots just after 8 p.m. Friday at 3rd and South Streets. They found a 25-year-old man, later identified by police as John Green, unconscious on the sidewalk, shot in the abdomen.

Green was rushed to Hahnemann Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"As you can imagine, shortly after 8 (p.m.) on South Street there are literally hundreds of people on the sidewalks," Small says, "and traffic is very, very heavy."

Less than a week later, police announced the arrest of 28-year-old Tylee Wilbur. Authorities say he is charged with murder, violation of uniforms act and related offenses.

Small says because the crime scene was so close to the theatre, police decided to cancel the concert.

"So we moved everyone who was in line, hundreds of people, we moved them out of the area in order to secure the scene," he says. "They were very cooperative, very peaceful, no problems whatsoever."

Small says witnesses saw the Wilbur allegedly jump into a limousine, which sped off heading eastbound on South Street. Police caught up with the vehicle on South Street and Columbus Boulevard.

Police also found a semi-automatic handgun in the wheel well of a parked vehicle in the 600 block of South American Street, which is just a block and a half from the shooting.
