Phila. Public Schools Receive Thousands Of New Books For New School Year

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia public elementary school teachers received gifts of books from the School District of Philadelphia for the upcoming school year.

Hartranft Elementary School was one of 40 schools across the school district receiving classroom libraries.

"The classroom libraries that we had were not up to par for what we're expecting our kids to be able to do, so we needed these books," says Principal Jason Lytle.

"The books came from the American Reading Company. There was a donation from the Children's Learning Initiative, as well as the Penn Foundation."

Kindergarten teacher Carla Jones-Harris was thrilled to receive three boxes of books.

"I love books! I want my kids to have books in their hands. I want them to be able to take them home."

She says she loves classic authors like Dr. Suess.

"But I also love books that are non-fiction and just really teach about our world."

Principal Lytle says, "We have the greatest teachers in the city in this school and anytime I can put a resource in their hands, I'm ecstatic about it."
