Phila. High School Students, Teacher Build Cross For World Meeting Of Families Youth Congress

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 10-foot cross made by high school students and their instructor will grace the World Meeting of Families Youth Summit.
A trio of students from Mercy Vocational High School in North Philadelphia created the curved white cross.
Seventeen-year-old Jimmy says together, they designed and researched the materials to use.
"We had to draw on a piece of wood what it was going to look like, after that, we had to cut it out and we had to use bendable plywood to get the curves, and we nailed it together and then painted it," said Jimmy.
A traditional cross is mounted in the center. Steve Hove is the student's instructor and says the wooden cross will not only be on public display, but:
"Young people from all around the city, and even all around the world, will be attaching their prayers to this cross," said Hove.
Sixteen-year-old Chris says this is a once in a lifetime experience.
"At first I was nervous, but it means a lot to me because a lot of people are going to see what I made and was part of," said Chris.
