Phila. City Council Candidate To Pay Fine For Raising Money Before Resigning

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia City Council candidate Derek Green engaged in political activity while still a city employee, according to a settlement he reached with the Ethics Board. Green's campaign was also fined for omitting donors from its campaign finance report.

The Democratic at-large candidate attended at least three fundraisers for The Green Fund, which became his campaign PAC, and agreed to attend a fourth, all before resigning his job as an aide to councilwoman Marian Tasco.

Ethics Board executive director Shane Creamer says that violates election regulations:

"Mr. Green was fined $1,200 for the four violations, $300 for each violation."

Green says it was a mistake:

"It was incorrect to do so and it was brought to the Ethics Board attention and we reached a settlement."

Creamer says the fund was separately fined $2,000 for failing to report more than 70 contributions and nearly 40 payments -- information it has since provided.
