DA Releases Info From Chester County Courthouse Shooting Investigation

By Jim Melwert

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) - The Chester County District Attorney's office has determined the shooting of a man in the lobby of the Justice Center on Tuesday was justified.

Now they're releasing details from their investigation.

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan says 34-year-old Curtis Smith walks through the doors of the justice center shortly before noon Tuesday, immediately pulls a knife, and slashes at a deputy -- identified as Kevin Brough:

"Smith's knife slashed through the back of Brough's uniform and into his ballistic vest, and was only stopped from hitting Kevin Brough by his ballistic vest."

Brough needed surgery on an injury to his hand. That injury was from a gunshot as he was so close to Smith as the deputy opened fire.

Hogan says Smith has been dealing with mental health issues since his brother murdered his father. That includes jumping a fence at the White House, which Hogan says a family member called an attempt at "suicide-by-cop."
