Giant Phillies Cap Worn By William Penn Statue Being Auctioned On EBay

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The giant Phillies cap that adorned the William Penn statue for the 1993 World Series can be yours. It's being auctioned on eBay.

The city rallied around Billy Penn atop City Hall as he wore the red, seven-foot tall Phillies cap for the '93 World Series. You remember how that ended.

A year or so later, memorabilia dealer Glen Spence says one of his guys saw the hat in the trash behind Veterans Stadium.

"One of them gave me a call and said, 'I think it's the large Billy Penn hat," Spence says. "'It's actually in a Dumpster.'"

Spence retrieved it. It sat for a time atop his former store on Oregon Avenue. He says the Phillies could have had it.

"No one asked for it," Spence says. "I'd have been happy to give it back."

If only the team knew, right?

"It's on the roof. It was five blocks from Veterans Stadium," he says. "I mean, you could probably have seen it from the Vet."

Now, Spence says, after years of being shuffled from warehouse to warehouse, the cap is on eBay with an asking price of $10,000.

He says it's time to let someone else love a priceless piece of Phillies lore.
