Demonstrators Hold Rally In Philadelphia On Anniversary Of Michael Brown's Death

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Sunday marked the first anniversary of the killing of Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager who was gunned down by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

Monday in Philadelphia, demonstrators held a rally to show their support for people who were killed by police officers.

Dozens of protesters gathered at the intersection of Broad and Erie Avenues in North Philadelphia to voice their frustration with the oft strained relationship between black people and the police.

"It's the death anniversary of a few people that was killed by police violence, state sanctioned violence in the past year and within the past month or so. This must stop. This cannot continue," said a protester.

Many of the demonstrators helped hold up a 125-foot-long scroll of the names of women who were killed by police or died in police custody.

"We're gathering here to not only stand in solidarity but to also allow the community to be aware of what's going on because a lot of the community does not know," said a protester.

There was a heavy police presence for the rally which remained peaceful.
