Police: Woman Shot While Opening Bakery In Overbrook Park

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Authorities say a woman was able to call 911 after being shot while opening her bakery in the Overbrook Park section of the city early Friday morning.

Police say it happened at the "Best Cake Kosher Bakery" on the 7500 block of Haverford Avenue.

When the woman opened the store at 6 a.m., police say two robbery suspects were waiting for her at the back door.

"They saw her inside, and we think she may have reached for a baseball bat that she has in there, the males appear to have come through the screen door by pushing it open, there's a confrontation inside and while inside it appears that she's shot one time," said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker.

Authorities say after being shot in the neck, the woman was able to get to a phone and call for help.

Police say they stole the victim's apron, which held about $300, before leaving the scene.

"Someone clearly knew her routine, they know the business, they know the business hours, they know what time she comes in," said Lt. Walker.

Taliah Thorton, a neighbor who says her cousin works at the bakery, says, "He knocked on my door and was really upset... crying and everything."

Customers of the bakery were saddened to hear the owner was a victim of an attack.

"I've known her for years. She's really a hard worker," says Nick Abdullah.

Officials say she was rushed to Presbyterian Hospital by police, where she is in critical, but stable condition.

Police say the shooting is under investigation.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area around 6 a.m. or any witnesses to come forward.
