Metronomic Chemotherapy For Canines

By Nan Talleno

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A diagnosis of cancer can be frightening but there is hope.  Cancer in dogs, just like humans can be treated with both chemotherapy and radiation procedures.  Of course these procedures are costly, time consuming, stressful and can often produce severe side effects.   There is a now a brand new type of treatment for canines that is much less harsh, less toxic, less expensive and without many side effects.  It's called Metronomic Chemotherapy and has been found to be safe, effective and much less stressful on both your dog and you.  This is a daily medication you can give to your dog in the comfort of your home with periodic visits to the vet.  I know this firsthand as I am currently using this treatment for my dog.

Metronomic Chemotherapy offers smaller but more frequent doses of chemotherapy medication and instead of directly attacking the tumor, it seeks out the cells that line the blood vessels to the tumor thereby blocking the blood supply to the cancerous growth.  The good news is that there is no negative effect on the normal cells that can be damaged by usual chemotherapy. This is used in different cases but primarily when a tumor has not spread.

Although this treatment is still very new to the veterinary world, Metronomic Chemotherapy holds much promise for success and has been known to be extremely effective.
