Weekend Box Office Report: Mission Accomplished For 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation'
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Its mission – and it chose to accept it – was to take the box office crown on its opening weekend.
That means it's mission accomplished for the fifth entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise, which easily surpassed expectations.
The action thriller, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, based on the classic TV series and starring Tom Cruise, debuted by earning an estimated $56-million.
Second place went to the weekend's other major mainstream release, Vacation – also a sequel of sorts – the comedy headlining Ed Helms and Christina Applegate. It took in $15-million.
In third was last weekend's leader, Ant-Man, with a total of $13-million.
And rounding out the top five were holdovers Minions and Pixels, with $12-million and $10-million, respectively.
As the second-highest-grossing weekend for any Mission: Impossible movie, this certainly represents a vote of moviegoers' confidence for both Tom Cruise and the franchise.
